Boulder Creek Marching Band earns Superior rating at NAU Band Day

Anthem’s Boulder Creek High School Marching Band was recently rewarded for their hard work and efforts by earning a Superior rating in Division 2 for their performance at the Northern Arizona University annual Band Day competition in Flagstaff, on Saturday, October 15th.

Under perfect conditions inside the NAU Walkup Skydome, the band played a challenging selection of music by composer and pianist Ludwig van Beethoven. The band is under the direction of Glenn Hart. The members on the band staff include; Mike May - Visual Coordinator, Ian Peterson - Brass Instructor, Christopher Serbic - Woodwind Instructor. The Jaguar Color Guard is under the direction and design of Jennifer Siler with percussion under the direction of Steven Siler.

Each band is judged on a 5 tier rating system with a Superior performance equivalent to getting an A on a report card. An Excellent rating is equivalent to a B, while a Good rating is equal to a C. Six judges evaluated bands in the caption areas of music performance (2 Judges), visual performance, general effect, auxiliary, and percussion. These areas determine each band’s overall rating. Caption awards were presented to all bands who, in the opinion of the adjudicators, exhibited excellence in their performance. Boulder Creek earned a caption in all 5 categories, earning them a Superior rating.

“This is surely is an exciting time to be a member of the Jaguar Pride. I have the privilege of working with such an outstanding group of students. They have been working nonstop since the beginning of August. It is good to see that all the hard work put in is paying off,” Hart said. This year BC welcomed its largest class of freshman in school history. The band has grown every year since the Boulder Creek opened, just over 7 years ago.

"Part of our success is the feeling of family we provide. Every member is as important as the next member. The Jaguar Pride takes the concept of teamwork to the next level.”

The marching band attends at least one band class during the school day and rehearses two nights per week, 3 hours per session. Performance at Friday night football games is mandatory and provides a great way to share their show before having to perform it during competitions on Saturdays. “We often see band alumni attend competitions to cheer on a group they will always feel a part of.”
